What is the Chartered Economist®?
The Chartered Economist® (Ch.E®) programme is designed by leading economists globally to bridge the gap between academic study and professional practice. It is the world's first graduate economics designation, and earning it verifies your skills, knowledge, ethics and dedication to deliver value in the workplace.
Ch.E®s are trusted by employers to bring clarity to decision-making - analysing economic issues such as unemployment, inflation, industrial productivity, trade policy and international markets, and translating that analysis into clear guidance for organisations and clients.
What do Chartered Economists® do?
Above all, Chartered Economists collect and scrutinise information in order to study, research, predict and evaluate business and revenue trends across industries. They track current events in the production and availability of goods, services and other resources to understand the past and forecast the future - and use that analysis to help control and regulate costs, interest rates and the distribution of products, guiding businesses and individuals through enterprise decisions.
A Chartered Economist® will typically:
- Study how society distributes resources - land, labour, raw materials and machinery - to produce goods and services.
- Conduct research, collect and analyse data, monitor economic trends and develop forecasts on issues such as energy costs, inflation, interest rates, exchange rates, business cycles, taxes and employment levels.
- Develop methods for obtaining the data they need - for example, sampling techniques for surveys and mathematical modelling techniques for forecasts.
- Prepare reports with tables and charts on research results, and present economic and statistical concepts clearly for audiences without a background in economics - including, for some economists, analysis for the media.
- Work in economic consulting or research firms, often performing the same tasks as economists employed by corporations.
- Produce macroeconomic analysis and forecasting whose findings are frequently published in newspapers and journal articles.
Types of economists
The Ch.E® body of knowledge spans the major branches of the profession. The following are examples of the types of economists working today:
Econometricians
Develop models and use mathematical analysis - calculus, game theory and regression - to test economic relationships and explain facts or trends in all areas of economics.
Financial Economists
Analyse savings, investments and risk, and study financial markets and financial institutions.
Industrial Organisation Economists
Study how companies within an industry are organised and how they compete, including how antitrust laws affect markets.
International Economists
Study international trade and the impact of globalisation, as well as global financial markets and exchange rates.
Labour Economists
Research the supply of workers and demand for labour - employment levels, wage setting, and the effects of policies such as minimum wage laws and institutions such as unions.
Macroeconomists & Monetary Economists
Examine the economy as a whole - unemployment, inflation and growth - and study fiscal and monetary policy, money supply and interest rates.
Microeconomists
Study the supply and demand decisions of individuals and firms - for example, the quantity of a product consumers will demand at a particular price.
Public Finance Economists
Study the role of government in the economy - analysing the effects of tax cuts, budget deficits and welfare policies.
