About the Programme

The Chartered Financial Economist® (Ch.FE®) combines solid training in microeconomic and macroeconomic principles with the quantitative methods needed to analyse financial markets, manage risk, and guide investment decisions. Demand for this expertise is growing rapidly across central banks, international organisations, commercial banks, and the wider private sector.

Financial economics focuses on decision-making under two key conditions: outcomes are uncertain, and decisions occur across different points in time. The discipline applies chiefly to investment in financial markets - stocks, bonds, derivatives - and intersects with microeconomics in the areas of insurance and saving.

A discipline with real-world impact. Financial economics gave rise to landmark tools such as the Black-Scholes formula, which created entirely new markets. The Ch.FE® programme demonstrates these ideas in the contexts where they are most widely used.

Finance Industry Overview

India's financial services sector contributes approximately 6 per cent of GDP and is growing rapidly. Commercial banks dominate with over 60 per cent market share, but the sector also spans:

  • Development finance institutions and non-banking financial companies
  • Insurance companies, cooperatives, and mutual funds
  • Payment banks and fintech platforms

India's life insurance sector ranks among the world's largest, and the mutual fund industry manages assets worth hundreds of billions of dollars. The financial services industry - covering investing, lending, insuring, trading, asset management, and foreign exchange - offers wide-ranging career options for Ch.FE® graduates.

Programme Objectives

The Ch.FE® programme combines broad education in economics with in-depth specialist training. Graduates are prepared for careers in:

  • Asset management and investment banking
  • Corporate financial management and M&A
  • Risk management and financial engineering

The programme also develops collaborative skills, qualitative and quantitative reasoning, and the ability to solve complex business problems with rigour and clarity.

What Do Financial Economists Do?

A financial economist carries out research, prepares analytical reports, and formulates plans to help organisations address economic and financial challenges. They are responsible for the production and distribution intelligence around goods and services, and collect and process economic and statistical data using sampling and econometric techniques.

  • Conduct research on economic issues and circulate findings through technical reports
  • Compile and analyse data to explain economic phenomena and calculate market trends
  • Consult and assist companies, organisations, and individuals on economic relationships
  • Provide litigation support by documenting expert testimony
  • Develop economic guidelines and standards and suggest policy positions
  • Contribute to strategic discussions and market-access planning
  • Communicate financial assessment results to internal and external audiences

Financial economists are also integral to ongoing financial projects, contributing to:

  • Cash-flow analysis and building financial models
  • Devising financing and capital structure strategies
  • Analysis of mergers and acquisitions
  • Researching capital budgets and investment decisions
  • Analysing portfolio investments and asset management choices
  • Developing and evaluating risk-management strategies
  • Generating cash-flow forecasts and valuation estimates
  • Sensitivity and risk analysis reports

Key Benefits

Financial economics builds on microeconomics, accounting, probability, and statistics - the core tools for measuring and evaluating risk. The programme provides a self-contained study of financial economics principles and a bridge to advanced work in economics and finance. It covers:

  • A critical discussion of efficient-markets theory
  • An overview of quantitative methods in finance
  • Risk aversion in the context of utility theory
  • Portfolio theory, the Capital Asset Pricing Model, and multi-factor asset pricing
  • Bond pricing, duration and convexity

Programme Curriculum

Curriculum of the Chartered Financial Economist®

The curriculum provides in-depth study of financial economics based on the core concepts of finance, accounting, and economics. It explores the moral and individual dimensions of financial economics and the ethical responsibilities of a Chartered Financial Economist.

An understanding of the principles of finance and financial economics is of prime importance for any Chartered Financial Economist. This module provides a basic grounding in financial markets and institutions, covering the allocation of resources, household savings and investment decisions, analysis of investment projects, and the financial structure of the firm and corporate finance.

Candidates will become familiar with the fundamentals of time and uncertainty in value, discounted cash flows, equity and debt valuation, and the term structure of interest rates. The objective is to enable a Chartered Financial Economist to understand portfolio theory, asset pricing theory, efficient market theory, financing decisions, and capital budgeting and structure.

Understanding the investment market and portfolio management is central to the Ch.FE® programme. This module covers investment strategies, performance evaluation, risk management, liquidity, and models of risk and return - including risk aversion and optimal portfolio construction.

Candidates will develop a thorough grounding in the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and explore the fundamentals of market efficiency, the efficient market hypothesis, and market analysis.

Know-how of derivatives in the financial sector is essential. This module covers the pricing of forwards, futures, swaps, and options; strategies for speculation and risk management; no-arbitrage pricing; binomial option pricing models; and the Black-Scholes option pricing model.

The module builds the foundation of derivatives pricing and modern risk management practice, including delta-hedging, Monte Carlo valuation, the Black-Scholes equation, and exotic options. Candidates also assess fixed-income derivatives and associated risk.

This module examines multidate security markets, covering equilibrium in multidate security markets and multidate arbitrage and positivity, along with dynamically complete markets and valuation.

Candidates will study the martingale property of security prices and gain an understanding of event prices, risk-neutral probabilities, the pricing kernel, and security gains as martingales. The module also covers conditional consumption-based security pricing and conditional beta pricing.

This module covers debt contracts, credit rationing, and the economics of banking. Topics include adverse selection in insurance markets, the standard debt contract, credit rationing, money as a means of payment, liquid and illiquid assets, and the optimal contract.

Candidates will study banks as deposit-taking institutions, problems of deposit contracts, adverse information, bank failure and bank runs. The module concludes with bank regulation, reserve requirements, suspension of convertibility, deposit insurance, and capital adequacy requirements.

This module explores the basic model of the theory of the firm and its interaction with financial markets and intermediaries. Candidates study the Modigliani-Miller Theorem and the firm's decision rule, together with financial markets and financial intermediaries examined in both theoretical and evolutionary contexts.

This module introduces the time-continuous model of financial markets. Candidates gain a thorough understanding of the Black-Scholes formula and Brownian motion, and study time continuity, the mutual fund theorem, and market equilibrium in continuous time.

This module examines the role of information and emerging technology in financial markets. Candidates study information revealed by prices and by trade, moral hazard, and the adverse effects of information asymmetry in financial markets - giving future Chartered Financial Economists an informed perspective on fintech and data-driven finance.
